Although we think of the internet as the most indispensable part of our interconnected society today, the fact is that the electrical grid is far more important. After all, the internet needs electricity. However, without electricity we would be back in the 19th century without lights, but only worse. The people in the 19th century knew how to live without electricity: we don’t.

The nation’s electrical power grid relies on the internet for its command and control. The good news is that this interconnectivity allows us to function with less infrastructure since it can be coordinated so well. The bad news is that the extreme amount of interconnectivity leaves the power grid increasingly vulnerable to attack by hackers.

Just about every prepper or survivalist can tell you how an EMP attack with a nuclear bomb would take out the power grid without the blast killing anyone. The “Electro-Magnetic Pulse” would cripple the country by leaving us without electricity and kill many more people than a nuclear blast would.

However, if hackers could accomplish the same thing without a nuclear bomb, they would have far more power. The greatest threat to our country, in terms of the largest amount of deaths, is certainly from an attack that takes out our power grid.

There have been many times in history when the “unthinkable” happened, but how could we possibly prepare for the power grid going down? The answer is counterintuitive. The answer is not stockpiling fuel for diesel generators to be able to make your own electricity. Rather, the answer is learning how to without electricity, for the most part, for an extended period of time.

There is a saying among backpackers that the more knowledge and skills you have in your head, the less gear you have to carry on your back. This is the best advice for preparing for a major power outage. Instead of trying to figure out how you will replace your source of electricity, it is much better to figure out how you can get by without it.

If you have an emergency power generator, it’s not likely that you’ll be able to store enough fuel for more than a few days, unless you have a lot of property and can store some 50 gallon drums of gas. If the power grid goes down, then gas stations won’t be able to pump gas, so you won’t be able to replace what you use.

The best way to prepare for an extended power outage is by practicing living without electricity. Although camping is perhaps the best way to practice, you can also simulate a power grid failure by turning off the electricity in your house for a weekend.

Without electricity, you’ll soon learn how much light you need for the nights, how you’ll cook without an electric stove (or a gas stove with electric ignition) and how to stay warm if it’s winter without your furnace.

You’ll be surprised how quickly you can come up with great solutions and how little money you’ll need to spend if you can undertake this exercise when the pressure isn’t on. However, if you wait until the power goes out for real, then it will be too late.

The following article was first published in 2010. We are featuring it here because it provides useful insight, as germane as ever, into how the of the governments are afraid of losing control over the population!

Introduction – What we are going to do is politically discuss the issues related to gun control.

Does Gun Control Reduce Crime? – Emphatically no. Never once did it ever do that.

Below are several studies that can be researched on the Internet yourself that document the fact that gun control never reduces crime.

New Jersey – In 1996 New Jersey passed what was considered to be the most stringent gun laws in the USA. Two years later their murder rate went up 46% and their robbery rate about doubled.

Hawaii – In 1968 Hawaii passed harsh gun laws. At the time of the legislation their murder rate was 2.4 per 100,000 per year. Nine years later their murder rate had tripled to 7.2 per 100,000.

Washington, D.C. – In 1976 they passed a major gun control law. They even stopped people from owning guns in their homes. Their murder rate went up 134% while the USA rate for murder dropped 2%.

New York City – They have some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the world. All sales of any sort of gun are restricted and tightly controlled. 20% of all armed robberies in the USA are committed in New York City and they do not have anywhere close to 20% of the population. This is what happens when the criminals know a certain population is unlikely to be unable to defend themselves.

Chicago, New York City, Detroit and Washington, D.C.- Each of these cities has accomplished a virtual ban on the private ownership of guns. The Washington D.C laws are being fought out in the appellate courts at present. These four cities have 20% of the homicides in the USA yet they only make up 6% of the USA population. This means that restrictive gun control leads to a tripling of the homicide rate. Some one is going to say wait the population in these areas is why the murder rate is so high. Fine we can look at Arlington, Virginia which is a city right across the Potomac River from Washington D.C with sensible gun control laws so the population base should not be that different. Their murder rate is 10% of Washington D.C. (7.0 murders per 100,000 people versus 77.8 murders per 100,000 people in Washington D.C). We can also look to Virginia Beach, Va. a nearby city of 400,000. They have sensible gun laws allowing for easy access to firearms and their murder rate is 4.1 per 100,000.

Other Effects Non-Restrictive Gun Laws have on Crime – In the USA in a given year law abiding citizens kills 2,000 to 3,000 criminals. They also wound another 9,000 to 17,000 criminals a year. This is a reduction in the load of violent crimes the government must arrest, detain, prosecute and imprison. It also sends a strong signal to the other would be criminals. Criminals worry far more about an encounter with an armed law abiding citizen than a policeman. Police are most likely going to be polite about asking the criminal to drop their weapon and submit. The citizen in fear of protecting himself and his family is going to be much more prone to firing his weapon than a police officer. Criminals’ greatest fear is running into an armed victim when committing a crime. This was based on a study of 1874 felons from 10 states. In this study 38% of these felons said at least one time they had been scared off, shot at or wounded by an armed victim. Only 1% of the time do criminals take a gun away from a victim, yet 10% of the police officers that are shot, are shot with their own guns. Police officers are slow to shoot and the criminals know this and thus are more fearful of an armed citizen. Private citizens kill three times as many criminals as police do. Remember if someone is assaulting you or robbing you or your house the police will likely only be taking a report not encountering the criminals. It is the citizen who needs all the help and assistance of weapons to survive the criminal encounter.

Why Do Governments Seek Gun Control? – Fear! They are afraid of losing control over the population. The prefect state of affairs for a police state is the confiscation of all privately owned firearms. Then the possibility of an overthrow of the government goes down by about 99.9%. They never want partial gun controls like only machine guns or “assault type weapons” to be banned. They want all the privately owned guns gone. The partial gun control is the Salami theory. You keep cutting a slice away until there is nothing left. The only reason for gun control is to make room for a totalitarian government, nothing else. Sometime there are people ignorantly confused who support gun control thinking it will do something to make the world a safer place to live. Play with these people and say when the government disarms then you will. Tell them to chase the government and tell them to have the government give up their guns for police leaving only the military armed. Use the British Bobbies who used to be unarmed as an example. Tell them the Cayman Island and Nassau police are unarmed. Have them call for the disarming of the police. Play with them. Have fun. Every time the police shoot someone accidentally tell them to call for the disarming of the police.

They were starting to introduce gun control bills again. We do not know how aggressively they will push them this time. Nothing in these bills will do any practical good in terms of reducing crime, not a single thing. They also increase the penalties each time. So if it would happen what would it look like. OK there would be a bill that say banned all assault weapons. The bill would say the attorney General can add any gun to the list he wanted. Over time he would keep adding guns to test the public response. The banned guns would be prohibited from being sold at first. They would leave .22 caliber single shot rifles and single shot shotguns until the end to satisfy the call for hunting guns. Then the banned guns would become illegal to own even if they were grandfathered in, registered whatever. This would be something like turn them in or face 20 years in prison for each gun plus a $100,000 fine for each gun. I am serious on the penalties.

No one would be coming to anyone’s house to collect the guns for a long time. They would wait for someone to get shot with a .22 caliber gun and then say these too need to be banned. They always love to call for new restrictive laws after a shooting crime. Do that back to them. Every time you see the police abuse a person with a taser call for them to be banned and not used by the police. They will soon stop when their own tactics gets turned on them. Now the people have their guns and they can run around quoting Charleston Heston and his out of my cold dead hands slogan. The next stage is anytime the local police get into a house like to respond to a burglary, a domestic abuse call, a noisy party anything and they see the guns then someone gets to go to jail for a long time. The word soon gets out. If you think the people that own guns are going to like get together, carry guns and march on Washington D.C. armed to the teeth to demand gun laws be repealed you need to get some counseling. You will never see this. If anything like this were ever going to happen it would have happened in 1968 with the first serious federal gun control law. This came on the heels of the Kennedy assassination. What did that have to do with gun control laws anyway?

I am going to say some things about how it used to be. If any of you find this too wild to be true verify it. Find old issues of Guns and Ammo magazines and read the ads. You were able to buy guns mail order across state lines before 1968. There were a few states that prohibited this but that was it. You were able to buy machine guns fairly easily. You were able to freely buy what they call destructive devices. Boys ant-tank rifles (Boys was a manufacturers name) were being sold for $99.00 with bipods and all. The ads used to say for the jackrabbit that got away. This rifle fires a .51 caliber round that is effective on lightly armored tanks. Bazookas were a mail order item as were mortars. Armor piercing ammo was freely available until the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. They had lovely armor piercing fully jacketed .45 auto rounds that would pierce engine blocks, let alone bullet resistant vests. Guns were not registered except for a few states and cities that did this. Those yellow forms came along with the 1968 gun control law. This was when guns were fairly well available and by mail order. An armed society is a polite society. Criminals are not polite.

Response To New Restrictive Gun Control Laws – We will now address how the people will be likely to respond. This is hypothetical and based on speculation only. No one can predict what the people will do with any accuracy including the government. There are many mitigating circumstances that will come to bear on the hearts and minds of those affected.

In this hypothetical scenario the people in our opinion are going to not physically resist new guns laws instead just sort of go with the flow and verbally oppose them only, for the most part. They will bury their guns and ammo in the woods. They will hide them inside the walls, under the floorboards etc. They will say things like well when the time comes etc. Eventually the local police will start arresting people when they discover the guns in vehicles, in houses, informants (the maid, the plumber, the cable TV guy, the alarm company guy) tell them about them and so forth. These people will be arrested and get probably 10 years for each gun plus massive fines like $100,000 for each gun. There will be calls for amnesty asking people to just turn the guns in and walk away free. Many will do this out of fear. There will be no revolutionary forces to join and resist. After a year or two there will be raids on houses. They will use devices to see images behind the sheetrock. They will use metal detectors in the yards and land.

When they find a gun after the owner does not turn it over when they show up they will throw the book at the person. They will take his family as accomplices. All will be in jail for many years. The fines will cause them to lose their homes, cars and assets. They will be destroyed completely. Only thing worse would be to kill them. Those with guns hidden in the woods will be questioned as to where their guns are. They will probably be charged with some crime for not reporting a stolen gun within 72 hours, which is found in HR 45 the latest gun control bill (not law yet). So when they say the guns were lost or stolen they get charged with the crime of not reporting this and get serious jail time for each gun. Gun registration is the prelude to the confiscation, nothing else.

The reporting the lost and stolen guns in 72 hours is the fix against you saying you lost the guns when they come to take them away. Those with unregistered guns will be able to hide them in the woods. There are many ways to do this securely and preserve the firearm. If the weapon is wiped free of prints and any blood like from getting pinched by the slide (think DNA) then this person should be safe if the weapons are found and not traceable to him in any way. What good is it doing them to have the guns buried in the woods? It is just a psychological game they are playing with themselves. Once a man came to Confucius and said I had a jar full of money buried in the woods. I went to dig it up to check on it and the money was gone. What should I do? Confucius said put rocks in the jar, bury it again and make believe the money is still there. It would be very dangerous for these people to even go and check on their weapons and they probably never will. I do not think there will be any rising up of gun owners. They are not going to engage the police in active firefights to keep their guns. The guns will just go away and the police state will be in full swing.

What the Police Are Missing – Police do not see their role in the police state correctly or even close to it. They miss the bigger picture. To them it is a status job, the pay is good and the perks are big. Police and their families get out from traffic tickets. Ask any law enforcement officer you may know well. This includes spouses, children, brothers, sisters, and parents. In many departments they even have little gold and silver courtesy badges they give their relatives. The police and their families get favorable treatment with accident reports, ouch if you are the other driver. They have a lot of favorable treatment letting them get away with things regular people do not get away with. They usually cannot get away with major crimes. Police carry guns all over the USA without a carry permit. They can carry on airplanes if they are Federal Officers. They can carry guns in government buildings, in stadiums, schools etc.

If they are in their own jurisdiction they can get away with anything short of major felonies with victims. Police like this treatment. It gives them status and pride. It teaches them there are only three classes of people. The ruling class to them is not the Federal Reserve Bank; they would not know what that is. It is the senators, congressmen, mayors, supervisors, judges etc. They know these people can exert their power and influence and make their life miserable in many ways. They leave these people alone. Then there are police, which they always leave alone. Then come you the citizen. You pay their salary and they have no respect for you. You do not matter in that you have no power to do anything against them and you cannot retaliate. They are there to control you. The Taser is the latest police state tactic to be adopted. If a person doe not verbally snap to and respond to a verbal command of a police officer like get out of the car, stand here, sit down, move here etc they taser them.

The police do not know they are conditioning the populace to respond to the police blindly without thinking or face painful consequences. I do not really know what they think. I guess they think it is proper to demand such respect and control over those they are supposed to protect. Most people that get tasered are involved in a victimless non-violent crime. This makes it worse. The police are not aware of any of this. They are in their own little world. They do not worry too much about the financial crisis in that they think there will always be work for them. Wait until the layoffs sink in later this year. Their attitude will change for the worse. They will do anything their handlers ask to keep their jobs. The police do not think they are there to protect and serve. They are there to control the populace and protect the ruling class and each other. Can you remember when police had nice government service looking uniforms, revolvers, long wooden sticks and helped people change flat tires. Now they look like storm troopers, wear black uniforms and masks, never help anyone with anything, have high tech weapons and strike fear and terror into the hearts of those that have contact with them. This is not being done by chance it is planned to strike fear into you of the police who used to be there to serve you. The police used to be hard on armed robbers, rapists, burglars, muggers and real criminals. Now most of the people in the prisons are there for crimes that are victimless. A government statue is not a victim.

When the Police State Flourishes What Is It Like For The Police? – Well this is something they do not consider. Let us say gun control has been accomplished and private ownership of guns is historical. So the people are no longer a threat. Who will the paranoid rulers fear next? They are always paranoid because they do not rule by popular support. Ever see the army of bodyguards they have now, this is nothing. You got it, the police and military is what they will fear the most. They have the weapons, the access, the association potential to organize etc. Imagine police leaving their guns in their lockers when going off shift. This is how it will be. No private guns for police anymore. Internal security investigations will become a lifestyle.

There will not be any more lawsuits against the government. The Internal Security Forces will be super cops trained to resent the police, take advantage of them and rule them by fear and harshness. What the police do the population now, is what the internal security forces will do to the police then only worse since there will not be any consequences for their actions. There will be mandatory polygraph exams. Long interrogations. Police homes and cars being searched. Their phones and email being tapped. They will be followed. Other police constantly being questioned about their colleagues. The role model is the SS Hitler had. Remember who tried to kill Hitler, the military on several occasions. The military will also be handled harshly but they are much more easily controlled due to the nature of the military but their internal security forces will constantly be engaged in a war of terror against them.

The internal security forces will have to get results or else they will be considered ineffective so one way or another they will be discovering sedition, spying, attempts to revolt, steal, commit criminal acts etc. The police will be policed very harshly. They will in turn be harsh towards the population. The police do not see any of this coming. The Federal Police are in the same boat as the local police. They will become more and more entrusted to police the police and protect the state as time goes on. There will not be much point in protecting the state from an unarmed populace so guess who they will focus on – the others who can have access to guns – the military and police. The internal security forces the federal police have will rein terror on them as well. They will have to uncover plots to keep their jobs and show they serve a purpose. Doom and gloom.

Will This Scenario Be Likely? – In our opinion no. We ascribe to the breaking up of the USA due to financial collapse similar to the USSR in the 1980’s. It looks like Obama is afraid to push forward with gun control legislation just now. This can be a ruse while they work hard to get it passed quietly without opposition until it is too late but unlikely. Obama has to maintain order in the face of the financial collapse, which is already happened, and getting worse by the day. New opposition from 25 million gun owners is not something him and Billary need right now. The countries in the world do not trust the US and their dollar and they are working fast to replace the dollar as the world reserve currency.

Anything like this will hurt the USA and throw them into hyperinflation. The USA will have to start buying foreign currency to make purchases abroad and the exchange rate will be bad for the USD. Gun control is a slow freight train that takes years to effect even from where they are today. The USA Government is really fighting for its continued existence and hoping to keep its role as a superpower and the world’s policeman. I would say they have two chances – slim and none. They destroyed themselves with their idiotic greedy monetary practices. The descriptive term should be – Dead Country Walking.

If it isn’t already, surviving economic collapse should be at the forefront of your mind. And with good reason; the pitiable state of the economy has sparked fear that the world is to face an even larger economic collapse in the coming year. We are truly in a precarious position. The moment the United States dollar experiences a weakening, and the value of basic commodities like oil, gold, and grain skyrocket, a lot of people will be scared for their own daily survival. But, is there still a way of surviving total economic collapse if this event were to take place? The good news is, the answer is yes. The bad news is, while every one of these tactics are absolutely achievable, most Americans will never take the care to implement them. For this reason most will either suffer terribly, or perish in the wake of this disaster. There are various survival skills, both physically and financially, which you can learn and implement now, in order for you and your family to survive in case there is a total economic meltdown.

Plan Ahead of Time

Surviving economic collapse is a planners game. One of the simplest, but greatest, ways of surviving economic collapse is to lay a plan out beforehand. List down all your assets and liabilities. How fast will you be able to pay out your debts and at the same time, buy your needed supplies? There should be no debt in your goals and you must also procure and store valuable assets. As much as possible, the preparation timetable on this needs to be brief and concise. All with a view at how soon you can get up to the barest minimum of survival supplies in the shortest amount of time. Beyond this it is also advisable to make a similar physical plan. Where will your family meet. What are your specific plans in case of natural disaster, fire, home intrusion etc. Run through these plans before hand and you will see that these will prove to be invaluable in the time of crises.

Convert Liquid Savings

If the US dollar collapses, your money will be useless. In order for your savings to be safe, convert a portion of your savings to precious metals and other valuable commodities. Economic collapse survival will NOT be dependent on U.S. dollars. These commodities will become your safety net in these perilous times. These can be utilized as a means of currency or exchanged for valuable currency like Swiss francs in a time of crises. As the value of dollar decreases, silver, gold, and other precious metals will have their value preserved or or even increased dramatically. This means that even if there were another economic recession, or total collapse you would have a means of survival.

Buy the Necessities

Economic collapse survival will not be a problem if you buy your valuable goods beforehand. This will include guns for your personal protection and hunting, as well as basic supplies like food. Foodstuff like legumes and grains can be stored easily for long periods of time. You can also start investing in bottles and tablets for water purification and keep several water bottles handy in case a shortage happens. Basic survival preparedness information is readily available and can be found numerous places online.

Grow Your Food

Raising some animals and growing your own supplies of food will also be great, if you have the wherewithal to do it. This is not an undertaking for the faint of heart. Farming and crop growing is a laborious task with it’s own specialized skill set. Some easier animals to tend are Rabbits and chickens, as they are small and require considerably less work. The chickens can also give you eggs as well, which are a great source of fat and protein, that can be a critical nutritional factor in you surviving economic collapse. In case there will be economic downturns like a depression or double dip recession, producing your own food is an essential skill that you need to have.

Prepare Your First Aid Kit

For economic collapse survival to be possible, you must see to it that you prepare your first aid and sewing kits as well. These are as critical to your survival as similar practical necessities of daily living. These kits are great to have around the house. They are readily available and can be used both for your regular day to day bumps and bruises and for emergencies.

Know the Community You are In

Wherever you might be living, see to it that you know all your neighbors. In case there will be a collapse in the economy, your life will be revolving locally and for you to survive, you will need to work with others and this will start with other families in your area. In many cases in fact community will be the sole determining factor individuals perishing or prospering. And Lastly make a list, or refer back to this mini-tutorial frequently, so that you can be at the forefront of surviving economic collapse.

Many people have the notion that to survive in a remote area they will be catching trout and shooting deer. But the truth is, survival subsistence is a matter of foraging. You eat whatever you can get whenever you can get it. If you don’t have a weapon and you don’t know how to trap and snare little critters then you must depend on the lower forms of life such as tadpoles, insects, slugs, worms, grubs, etc.

Having a firearm gives you an edge and allows you to reap a bountiful harvest of the most common animals you will encounter – mice, rats, lizards, squirrels, snakes, small birds, porcupines, and the like. Often, deer and other large mammals are either not present or rarely encountered. Therefore, the best firearm to have in such a situation will be one that will take the small and very small game at close to moderate ranges, allow you to shoot the quarry when it is running or climbing, and still has the capability to down a big animal if you are lucky enough to have one come your way.

Only a shotgun can meet those requirements. Shot cartridges fired out of rifle and pistol barrels, even .410 from rifled barrels, produce wide uneven patterns that are of limited usefulness even at very close range. But a true shotgun, even a .410, is quick and effective and will easily take crawling, running, climbing, and flying small game. A shotgun fires a variety of shot sizes, including buckshot and slugs. A shotgun is just the thing for foraging.

Various repeaters and combination guns are often recommended as good candidates for a survival gun. But let’s assume that because of cost, weight, and simplicity we have decided on a single-shot shotgun.

If I had to choose a single-shot shotgun for a survival situation it would be a lightened break-down 12 gauge with cylinder bore. The effectiveness of a 12 gauge for game of any size is well established. I would choose a variety of shotgun cartridges that included birdshot, No. 4 buckshot (.24 caliber, 27 pellets), and slugs. I would also add some 12 gauge flare cartridges and some 12 gauge whistling cartridges to use for signaling.

If I had to reduce weight, my reluctant next choice would be for a .410. A 28 gauge would be a better choice than the .410 but 28 gauge buckshot and slugs are almost impossible to find. Regarding a 20 gauge, if I can carry a gun with the size and weight of a 20 gauge then I might as well just take a 12 gauge.

If you plan on putting together a survival kit, here are just a few thing to consider. Make sure you include some wire for snares. You can wrap it around a knife handle or some other item you already have in the kit. Mousetraps and rat traps are also very handy to have. You don’t take the whole trap. Instead, remove all the metal parts from the wooden board, discard the board and keep the parts. Then, in the wild, you can reassemble the trap on any piece of wood – log, branch, stump, driftwood, etc. A metal can or cup can be a lifesaver. You can boil water in it, use it to make soup out of little animals, polish the bottom to make a mirror for signaling, collect dripping water or scoop up water from puddles and depressions with it. And a metal can won’t take up any space at all if you use it as a container for your survival items.

Preppers have a term for the civil unrest and chaos that could follow an SHTF scenario, and it is “WROL.” WROL stands for “Without Rule of Law” and is the thing that survivalists prepare for especially. Images of ‘Mad Max’ come to mind, in a society where the society has broken down and it’s every man for himself.

However, what about all the places on the continuum that are this side of WROL, which are far more likely to be experienced? What about a scenario where the economy collapses or is on the verge of collapse and crime skyrockets, but we still have police trying their best to keep order?

Whatever situation we find ourselves in, we all want to know how to stay safe, and only the young studs among us are naive enough to think that they can be vigilant enough with their stockpile of guns to not have to worry.

There are two main strategies that I advocate for wiser men to employ in order to stay safe when the SHTF happens and you realize that you can’t walk around with a gun in your hand 24/7.

Strategy 1: Gray Man

This strategy says that you want to blend in and not attract attention. You don’t want to be the person that someone would remember in a crowd. If you wear drab clothing instead of expense stuff from “The North Face” and avoid camouflage and cool tactical clothing, then nobody will think twice about you.

By not dressing to be a victim or advertising that you are a prepper that has expensive gear, you will avoid the two biggest mistakes that people make to attract bad guys who want to rob you of nice stuff.

Strategy 2: The Dummy Wallet

If you are ever confronted by a man (or men) who want your wallet, there is absolutely no reason not to give it to them except for your pride. Whatever you have in your wallet cannot possibly be worth the bruises and possibly stitches and a trip to the urgent care center that will almost certainly result from a fight: even if you win.

Above everything else, preppers want to be smart. They want to be prepared so that they have no regrets and maybe can even say “I told you so” after they are proven right with all their preps.

It isn’t really smart to get into a fight to defend a wallet. A trip to the emergency room will set you back at least the cost of your insurance deductible plus ruin your day, or much worse.

If you have your money and credit cards in your front pocket in a money clip and have some expired credit cards and store loyalty cards and maybe $30 in cash in your wallet, you can cheerfully give the bad guy your wallet knowing that you’re not out much and go happily on your way.

The hard-frozen December morning silence was shattered by a reverberating howl. The ground seemed to come rushing towards him as equilibrium flew away like his misty breath. The spinning snowbank softened the body-blow but filled his eyes and mouth with dirty, re-plowed ice and gravel.

One second he was absent-mindedly shoveling the old, frozen-over snow fall from several days past, and the next he was thrown to the ground as the world spun and bucked like a rodeo mustang underneath him.

He was flailing his arms trying to hold onto something, anything, as the ground humped and twisted, shrieking in it’s agony beneath him. His thoughts and perhaps his screams were drowned out by the howling roar of a million freight trains filling the otherwise subdued winter morning air.

His mind was screaming, “Earthquake! earthquake!” Then the profanity came streaming out like a full on fire hose. Or maybe it wasn’t his mind screaming, he couldn’t tell.

Gasping for the breath stolen by the body slam to the snowbank, the burning hoarseness of his breathing belied the fact that he was the one screaming, unnoticed in that roaring, howling insanity totally filling the world around him.

As the world stopped spinning and the howling died down, he was able to hear other sounds, very much non-typical sounds for a cold winter’s day in December. The howling of dogs, and the excited clatter of chickens was first and foremost, the deep rumbling of the earth taking second stage to the excited animal world.

An odd crackling noise interspersed with pops and fizzles propelled him off his bruised side looking for the fire. The first tendrils of smoke coming from a shattered window made it clear what to do next.

Fire! fire! Someone shouted, but he couldn’t tell where it came from.

Running the thirty yards to the cabin was not easy in winter gear and Packs but adrenaline gave him the ability to reach the door in seconds, pushing aside the heavy oak and wrought-iron monster to survey the scene inside.

Because of preparedness training and planning, the damage was not as severe as it could have been. Sure, the windows were all broken or at least cracked but the double and triple panes had kept most of them at least weather proof.

The smoke was coming from the huge, black iron stove in the middle of the room. The pipe had burst loose from the top of the stove which was rapidly filling the room with the smell of burning pine. The acrid, stinging vapors burned his eyes as he jammed the stovepipe back into place.

Starting to turn, he was again slammed hard but this time the cause was obvious and licking his face. “Down!” Once was all it took but the big Labrador couldn’t control his shivering and querulous whining.

Bending at the knees and wrapping his arms around his big brown friend, he calmed the shaking, whining animal and himself as well. ” ‘s okay, Buddy, ‘s okay.” “It’s all over, Buddy,” “Let’s go see what happened.”

He had the strangest feeling at that moment, kind of a tingle or maybe a little buzz in his mind. Sort of like the after-affects of a heavy mushroom trip when reality isn’t quite screwed back into place yet. He brushed it off, and got up, sliding his hands one more time over the panting dog.

This time the feeling was way more pronounced, almost like an electric shock, (we okay?). “Huh?” He looked around the room searching for another person. (okay now?) He automatically replied to the question, “Sure, everything is okay now,” and stopped dead in his tracks.

He looked down into the pleading eyes of his Labrador friend and companion for over five years. “Uh, uh, uh” he couldn’t bring himself to say what he wanted to, just stuttered with the shocking realization of what had just taken place.

He knelt again, holding the big dog’s head cupped in his hands, staring into the large, liquid brown eyes. “Buddy, was that you?” The answer, tickling his mind like a tiny feather, was the last thing he heard as waves of blackness engulfed him, (me!)

I believe the reason they were healthier is because they lived off the land and used herbs and other plants as their food and medicine. 4. Saw Palmetto – By now probably everyone knows that saw palmetto can cut the risk of prostate cancer, but recently it has been discovered that when used by women, it gets rid of facial hair. It is responsible for these two seemingly unrelated benefits because it balances the body’s hormones. It is also being used to help some patients who have polycystic ovary syndrome.

5. Stinging nettle – New research indicates that this herb has many benefits and that it is 50% more effective at overcoming nasal allergies than the most popular over-the-counter meds. It seems that this herb impedes the production of histamine, which is a chemical produced by the immune system that causes congestion, sneezing and other related allergy symptoms. It is a natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, as well, and helps shrink swollen nasal passages.

6. White Willow – Native Americans made tea from this herb and drank it to ease aches and pains. The bark of this plant contains salicin, which is the same chemical in aspirin that is responsible for the relief of pain. There is a difference in how the same substance from two different sources is absorbed by the body: aspirin works faster, while white willow relieves pain longer. An added benefit of white willow is that it doesn’t irritate the stomach. You can either drink this as a tea or take it in capsule form.

7. Yarrow – The Navaho called this tiny flower “life medicine,” and it contains ingredients that can numb pain on contact. It also contains natural coagulants that help stop bleeding from wounds. It is also an antiseptic and kills surface bacteria. The Cherokee bathed in the leaves of this plant after battles to help speed healing time. It can also be used for skin rashes and conditions like eczema. Look for it in your health food store in cream or ointment form.

Native Americans were very attuned to the land and discovered the medicinal properties of these wondrous herbs which helped keep them healthy. The real beauty of using these herbs is that they don’t produce the adverse side-effects of prescription and over-the-counter medications. Since 2000, many millions of Americans have endured a savage assault on their survival, their economic rights. Food prices are going up, as the Wall St. centered, investor community, motivated by the market collapse of 2007, are heavily invested in food commodities; it’s the last sector of the population’s economy that can be looted. Food has been added to the casino economy, food derivatives facilitate scarcity and speculation in the population’s food supply; allowing investors to make a killing.

To most of us, the struggle to feed ourselves seems remote now, although prices are going up, yet we are unaware 49 million Americans are near or going hungry; hunger in America is increasing as the poverty rate increases. The fact that one to two billions of people around the globe go hungry, will now be our shared national experience. There are many facets and factors operating this food offensive against humanity.

Goldman Sachs made more than $400 million dollars gambling in food prices in 2012, hundreds of millions of people went without food, starved. Morgan Stanley, Barclays, Goldman Sachs and others are taking advantage of the deregulation they engineered and foster; they create commodity derivative markets, financial instruments, investment products, etc., taking advantage of speculation, volatility and price spikes, impacting the survival of people who actually struggle to feed themselves and their families. The United States has passed legislation, not yet implemented, to control food speculation, as Goldman Sachs’ machinations in lobbying and court filed actions, has acted to impede the new regulations. Anti-Speculation in Food legislation is being proposed in the European Union, however it seems to have been tabled, due to the lobbying efforts of Goldman Sachs and company.

The efforts of the US Dept of Agriculture head, Secretary Tom Vilsack, the priorities of the Obama Administration, must be investigated for compliance with the USDA mission that supports the population’s standard of living and corrected, so that agriculture policy will facilitate the national security requirements, not Globalization. Sec. Villsack will deliver the February 7th keynote speech, at the 18th Annual National Ethanol Conference of the U.S. Renewable Fuels Association,(RFA), in Las Vegas, Nevada. RFA has applauded the USDA, and the Obama Administration for their “continuing investment in next generation biofuels” which means converting food crops into fuel biomass, prioritizing US consumption of food as fuel. This cannot be.

The purpose of agriculture, farms, and the food production industry, is to fulfill the national security obligations, that is to produce and distribute, safe, wholesome, food in abundance and protect the population from high food prices, food scarcity and starvation; this objective has been attacked by neo-Liberal Globalization that finds the optimum use for the national food capacity is in fuel and exportation, supporting the new Biobased Economy; as it is, at least 42% of the national corn crop is dedicated to the gas tank, not the family table. Food for Fuel is every bit an offensive against the population’s survival, decreasing food available for human consumption, while having farmers and even the US Navy shackled to this insane policy.

Monsanto, BASF, Syngenta, Dupont/Pioneer, et al are dedicating resources and research to the promise of maximized profits in biofuels, in the genetics of soy bean for diesel fuel and in corn for ethanol. Patents on food crops for biofuels are being filed.

Inadequate nutrition, less feed available, for animal livestock herds, impacted by the requirements of the Biobased Economy also reduce food production for humans.

Flooding, like that, brought on by Hurricane Issac, in the Louisiana area, and the worst drought since the 1950’s, has been a great impact on farm production, and livestock herds, especially in the southwest United States where the drought was most severe. In 40 states, the farm production loses to drought affects 80% of farms. The affected cattle, and other livestock, damage done to crops are incalculable here. This destruction to farms, crops and livestock, could have been minimized by maintaining the present water management infrastructure and additionally, Federal directed funding and labor to constructing the new modern water harvesting and distribution systems, throughout North America, as it is proposed in the new economy platform, the North American Water and Power Alliance, (NAWAPA 21). This project could employ 8 million Americans, lead to the creation of several more modernizing, economy platforms, while reversing the national economy crisis.

Usurious, Private Sector, finance of government, resulting in past austerity budgets at every level of government, which have been given cover by ‘conservative’ politics, and the narrow minded, short sighted, austerity being planned for the future, are also responsible for this lack of infrastructure in water management and agriculture policy. National Banking, funding projects through the national credit system, must be implemented as economy formation, to correct the money problem affecting so many government entities that are charged to support the population not corporatism.

National Farm Associations must find their forum(s) and communicate the crisis to America, political leadership, and work together with the support of the USDA to ensure that farm production levels will be pushed back up and maintained at normal production levels. Crop production, measured in tonnage, has already fallen, this decline has to be stopped. Farm land that suffered damage must be repaired and land set aside in Conservation Programs, must be released into farm production use, as soon as possible. National Banking facilities must fund the farmers repair costs and seed purchases for reseeding repaired land in use and seeding new land.

Millions of high paying jobs will lift the economy, out of the phony paper, bailout economy, to new heights we haven’t seen in a few generations. We have a great future ahead of us!
